Coronavirus: 188 new cases announced on Thursday

Authorities on Thursday announced 188 new cases of the coronavirus, the second highest daily tally since the outbreak began back in March.

The high number continued the trend established since last week and comes a day before night-time curfews are to be re-imposed in the Limassol and Paphos districts.

The majority of the latest cases (140) came about as a result of people getting tested on their own initiative.

The samples gathered from private testing amounted to 2,380. The overall tests, through which the 188 positives were detected, came to 4,304.

Contract-tracing positives numbered 22, from 375 samples.

Another five cases (from 52 samples) were tracked by the microbiology labs of the various general hospitals.

Thirteen more came about from 152 persons being referred for testing by their personal physicians.

Testing at airports (1,069 samples) yielded seven cases.

Finally, one person tested positive from among 49 samples collected from football clubs.

Fifty-one coronavirus tests among schoolchildren and teachers found no case. Likewise no one tested positive from 132 samples taken from nursing homes and similar facilities.

As of now, 22 people are being treated at the Famagusta referral hospital for Sars-Cov-2, of which four in the increased care unit.

There have been no new admissions to the Nicosia general hospital’s ICU unit, which is caring for two patients. Two more persons are being treated in the ward designated for Covid-19.

To date, the cumulative number of cases in Cyprus comes to 3,154.
